Health, Safety and Environmental Manager
JOB INTRODUCTION
Since 1969, M Gaze & Co has specialised in all types of waste management (or waste disposal) from solid to liquid and gas. This includes the collection, transportation, treatment and disposal of waste, together with concise monitoring and regulation of the waste management process at their 50-acre site Norfolk.
We are looking for a proactive and experienced Waste Management Environmental, Health and Safety Manager to play a pivotal role in the expansion of our waste management operations. This individual will have the unique opportunity to shape and define the health and safety function for a growing business. The ideal candidate will not only ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations but also take a lead role in developing and implementing strategies for safe, sustainable, and efficient health & safety and environmental systems as our operations scale. Your role will involve overseeing work systems to ensure the business activity meets the highest environmental and health & safety standards, the employees are kept safe and well and that the working conditions are safe and meet legal requirements. KEY RESPONSIBILTIES:
Strategic Leadership & Collaboration:
- Act as a trusted member of the Management Team, providing administrative, HR, and financial insights to inform strategic decision-making.
- Contribute to company-wide initiatives and goals, offering input on office operations, HR practices, and financial health.
- Assist with internal projects development, roll out and design.
- Participate in high-level management meetings, providing data-driven recommendations and supporting strategic business initiatives.
- Help ensure the alignment of day-to-day operations with the company’s long-term vision and goals.
Environmental and Health & Safety Leadership: Take ownership of the entire health and safety program within waste management operations. Develop and lead the creation and execution of safety policies and procedures tailored to the growth and expansion of the business. This includes:
- Overseeing work systems to ensure business activity meets the highest health & safety standards, the employees are kept safe and well and that the working conditions are safe and meet legal requirements.
- Working with the management team to manage the performance of staff. Set performance goals, conduct evaluations, and provide feedback to ensure a high-performing safety team.
- Assisting in the resolution of workplace disciplinary proceedings, disputes or concerns which include conducting investigations.
- Coordinate and support the overall health & safety and environmental program to ensure compliance with all regulatory and company requirements
- Responsibility for supporting the ongoing maintenance and development of the health, safety & environmental management systems currently operated and expand as necessary.
- Devising, issuing and enforcing standard operating procedures related to both health & safety and environmental initiatives.
Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure the organization remains in full compliance with health and safety legislation and company standards. Oversee risk assessments, regulatory reporting, and audits, adapting processes to meet the needs of expanding operations. This includes:
- Liaison with the Environment Agency (EA) to ensure compliance with PPC Permit requirements and also with Water Services Regulation Authority (WSRA) to ensure compliance of the Effluent Discharge Consent.
- Ensure compliance with environmental and health & safety legislation and industry standards.
- Monitoring and enforcement of compliance within M. Gaze & Co. Ltd health & safety policies and statutory safety requirements.
- Overseeing risk assessment, method statement/safe systems of work procedures
- Undertaking and reporting on compliance inspections of sites
- Occasional visits to customer sites to produce unique risk assessments and method statements for high-risk activities and conducting quality inspections.
- Occasional visits to disposal sites to ensure compliance with permit and all relevant HSE regulations.
- Ensuring that all contractors on site have relevant insurances and risk assessments and that they are fully inducted to site.
- Inducting all new employees to site along with the Operations and Office Manager, ensuring relevant health and safety forms are completed.
- Working alongside the external Health and Safety consultant to ensure M. Gaze’s ongoing compliance with Health & Safety.
- Completing inspections and documents in accordance with the Environmental Management System.
- Ensuring that the bi-yearly PPE inspections and yearly certification of harnesses and PAT testing are carried out and updated as needed
Customized Environmental and Health & Safety Programs: Design and implement comprehensive safety training programs that are adaptable as the company grows. Tailor programs to the specific risks associated with new operations, including new facilities, waste streams, and geographic locations. This includes:
- Promoting a continuous improvement in environmental and health & safety practices across site.
- Leading and coordinating health and safety training programs ensuring employees receive training on health and safety best practices and compliance.
- Providing training and guidance to staff on environmental best practices.
- Ensuring that all staff have access/are supplied with the relevant health and safety documents (including but not limited to; risk assessments, training documents, COSHH assessments, standard operating procedures)
- Carrying out health and safety inductions and in-house training including toolbox talks
Incident Prevention & Investigation: Investigate incidents and near-misses to identify root causes and implement corrective actions. Lead initiatives to proactively reduce accidents, injuries, and environmental risks by applying best practices to waste management operations. This includes:
- Overseeing the fire prevention program on site, including monthly fire drills and checks.
- Participating and where necessary leading on accident investigations, ensuring appropriate investigations, corrective action and statutory reporting occurs in a timely and efficient manner
- Ensuring all risk assessments, safe working procedures and emergency arrangements are current and being adhered to by all employees
Emergency Response Development: Establish and refine emergency response protocols for expanding operations, focusing on preparedness for various waste-related incidents. Ensure that staff are well-prepared for emergencies and hazards unique to the company’s waste management operations.
- Acting as lead first aid and regularly checking first aid supplies and replacing them as needed
Data-Driven Safety Monitoring: Utilize safety management software and data analytics to monitor environmental and health & safety performance across the site. Provide regular reports for the management team on trends, performance metrics, and areas of improvement. This includes:
- Completing, organising and maintaining accurate records of environmental and health & safety activities and undertake:
- Regularly conduct environmental impact assessments and audits
- Conducting daily site walk rounds for raising action logs in the Waste Transfer Station, Compost Shed and Maturation Bays, Workshop and Waste Water Treatment Works.
- Raising permits for site activities as and when required, including hot works and electrical & mechanical isolation permits
- Ensuring plant/machinery daily checks are being completed and necessary defects reported to the workshop
- Ensuring hot work permits and fire checks are raised and signed off within the workshop
- Completing health and safety questionnaires/document requests from customers and suppliers.
- Maintaining an up-to-date database of all environmental and health & safety documents.
Expansion Strategy: As the company expands, assess and align the environmental and health & safety practices with new waste management operations, facilities, and technologies. Develop scalable systems that ensure safety compliance and promote a culture of safety at all levels. This includes:
- Devising, managing and the implementation of quality systems.
- Developing, implementing, and maintaining environmental and health & safety policies and procedures in line with legal requirements and best practices.
- Leading initiatives to reduce waste, energy consumption, and carbon footprint
- Participate in project planning and execution to ensure the health and safety dimension of site projects is fully considered at planning stage and changes are planned and implemented appropriately.
Cultural Change Agent: Act as a champion for health and safety within the organization, promoting a proactive, health & safety-first mentality as the company expands. Encourage collaboration across departments to incorporate health and safety practices into day-to-day operations.
Continuous Learning & Innovation: Stay current with industry best practices, emerging risks, and regulatory changes. Incorporate innovations in safety technology, processes, and waste management practices to ensure that environmental and health & safety standards evolve with the company.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Education Required: A NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety or Environmental Management or be willing to study to achieve the same. NEBOSH General Certificate, NEBOSH Construction Certificate, NEBOSH Environmental Certificate, IOSH Membership
- Desirable: Degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, or a related field, Chartered IOSH Membership, Management Experience
- Experience: At least 5 years of experience in health and safety within the waste management, environmental services, or industrial sectors, with a proven track record in scaling safety programs in growing businesses. Background in construction related projects and a firm awareness of CDM2015 requirements. Understanding of electrical and mechanical operations. Awareness in vehicle/transport and fabrication workshop.
- Expertise: Strong knowledge of waste management operations, including hazardous materials handling, transportation, recycling, and disposal. Familiarity with OSHA regulations, EPA guidelines, and industry best practices for health and safety. Ability to conduct audits and inspections.
- Skills: Excellent leadership, administration and communication skills with the ability to influence and inspire at all levels of the organization. Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to manage complex projects. Proficiency in health safety management software and data analytics.

- Physical Requirements: Ability to conduct site inspections in various environments, including outdoor and industrial settings. Willingness to travel to multiple locations as the business expands.

SALARY & HOURS
£ 48,000+
Hours and Pay negotiable for the right candidate.
