There are multiple variables that can contribute to the accumulation of lagoon sludge. Aerators are important to keeping water mixed and preventing build up – if these aerators are not performing effectively, then problems will arise. Older lagoons will also naturally be more prone to a frequent build-up of sludge.

Lagoon sludge can present many problems. Sludge will naturally accumulate at the bottom and reduce capacity, resulting in less than efficient operation. Unpleasant odours will also come with excess accumulation because of anaerobic breakdown, while effluent and ammonia concentrations can rise and have the potential to cause regulatory problems and even system failure (in severe cases).
