Waste and Resource Mangement

Storage tanks are subject to a range of forces that can cause
erosion which, if left unchecked, can result in failure. The consequences of failed tanks can be incredibly costly, making
maintenance of their health informed by regular and accurate inspections critical. Here, robotics can play a crucial role and help save large sums on labour-intensive processes.
Robotics can help address many challenges, and we are building our own to match the needs of our customers. By examining tanks quickly and accurately without the need for people to go inside, which requires costly emptying processes, robotics can help provide key diagnostics conveniently and safely.
This is in contrast to traditional inspection methods which require multiple teams to be on-site to oversee meticulous preparation protocols.
Despite being sturdy structures, industrial tanks, shafts, silos and other storage equipment are exposed to erosion. Equipment stored outside or above ground is vulnerable to the elements such as wind and rain, while all storage units contain contents which itself can erode from the inside. The key to avoiding costly damage is to regularly carry out inspections with a predictive maintenance mindset – this will allow you to anticipate faults and act on them before they become a problem.
Robotics can be essential tools to assist with inspections. Not only can they access difficult to reach areas, they can process detailed images and spot potential problems that human inspection may miss. Use of robotics also reduces the need for human workers to enter a tank, making the process safer and more efficient.
Conventional inspection methods typically involve draining, cleaning with water and/or solvents, and ventilating before a human is safe to enter. These activities can be time consuming and expensive from an energy use perspective. Robotics, on the other hand, can enter tanks and carry out routine inspections without the need for rigorous preparations.
